Starting on Independence Day 2016, I set out on a on a year-long trip around the world.
It didn’t go as planned.
Then again, I didn’t really have a plan.
Travel with one-way tickets
Airfares are a lot cheaper when you’re only buying one-way tickets!
It’s one of the things you learn when you’re booking flights. That’s not to say you can “cheat” the system buy buying two one-way tickets for a round-trip, it doesn’t work like that.
Instead, you buy a one-way ticket because you’re not coming back.
When your only way is “forward,” most every flight is under $500! Actually, most are under $150!
It’s very liberating.
Two more observations:
You don’t have any keys, and it takes a while to get used to that. No house, car, or office keys. No keys to the P.O. box or the storage unit. Sure, you’ll get hotel credit card keys, but that’s not the same.
Something else: You don’t sing. I’m not sure why, but it doesn’t feel the same to sing in a hotel shower, worried that those three raps on the door followed by “Housekeeping!!” will ruin your version of “My Way.”
Oh, one last thing. Showers. It’s amazing how so many people react to what’s been a fact of life for us Big Guys trying to get along in this Small World.
