It only takes about an hour to fly from Auckland to Wellington, New Zealand, going from the top of the north island to its southern tip. After reading several reviews about the “awesome” ferry ride from Welly to the south island, I had to experience it for myself.
But first, a couple of days in New Zealand’s capital city. The weather was less than perfect but I didn’t want to spend much time walking around anyway. My AirBnB is located in a part of the city called The Terrace. Built into a steep hill, you rely on elevators in neighboring buildings to get to and from the bustling waterfront. Thank God for the neighbors, the frequent climbs would be unbearable!
If you’re not out on the water (and it looks like most of this city is) the funicular and the National Museum are two good options for visitors. For about $3 US, you can take the five-minute cable car ride up the mountain to the cable car museum, nearby botanical garden, and planetarium.
The ride back down is an even better way to experience the trippy light show in the tunnel.
Along Wellington’s waterfront, you’ll find Te Papa Tongarewa, the National Museum of New Zealand. During my visit, there was a jaw-dropping exhibition on Gallipoli and the impact World War I had on the country. The display includes giant figures that are almost 2 ½ times life size and created with incredible detail.
More than 2,700 Kiwis were killed in battle on Gallipoli and the exhibit comes 100 years after their sacrifice.
Like most cities, the waterfront is where it’s at, with stores, bars, restaurants, and even….
That might have come in handy after climbing to the top of the hill.
